A diamond is born deep inside volcanic rocks and the piece of rock containing diamond is thrown up by molten lava to the surface. The rock is known as kimberlite. India had produced some of the biggest and most popular diamonds in the world. However, in modern times South Africa is the biggest producer of diamonds through Kimberly which was discovered in 1866. Until 1989, De Beers controlled diamond trade. However, the power shifted with 2 major discoveries. Argyle Mine was discovered in Australia in 1985 followed by another mine in Canada in 2000. Moreover, public awareness of ‘blood diamonds’ also contributed to the shift. Currently there are many sources of diamonds in the world.

The Argyle Mine in Australia produces transparent and fancy colored diamonds in equally large quantities. Blue diamonds are highly coveted for their rarity and unique beauty. The Hope Diamond is the most popular and extraordinary blue diamond the world has ever seen. Various South African mines have also yielded some striking blue diamonds. Pink diamond is the rarest among fancy colored diamonds in the world. Argyle has yielded quite a few natural pink diamonds of highest quality. The mysterious aspect of a pink diamond is that its composition providing that pretty pink hue is still unknown.

Next in popularity is the yellow diamond. Well, yellow diamond is not as rare as its pink and blue counterparts. Hence, it is a more affordable option for buyers desiring to own a diamond. While these are the colors ruling the hearts of diamond lovers, there is another hue which is not so popular but is equally brilliant; natural black diamonds known as carbonados. These are rare and mysterious as well. Not just due to its colors but also because of its value, diamonds have been the most intriguing and powerful gemstones. They have brought down rulers and have been the cause of wars. Now, diamonds are the most sought after gemstones for engagement and wedding rings which make the vows eternal.
